- Leaf

A leaf is an outgrowth of a plant that grows from a node in the stem. Most leaves are flat and contain chloroplasts; their main function if to make food energy through photosynthesis. The first leaf to grow from a seed is called the cotyledon.

Lichens are organisms that are a symbiosis between algae and fungus. The photosynthetic algae produce food and the fungus provides protection for the algae. Lichens can survive in a variety of conditions and are found worldwide.
